Graduate Management Admission Test is a standardized assessment test created by management schools for management programs. It has been the test of choice by world’s business leaders to get into the world’s business school. The GMAT Test contains four sections:
  • an Analytical Writing section with one tasks, which always comes first in the test
  • one Integrated Reasoning section
  • one Verbal Reasoning section
  • one Quantitative Reasoning section
Typical Computer-based GMAT Total testing time is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, including the unscored questions.
Measure/Section Number of Questions Time
Analytical Writing 1 ”Analyze an Argument” task 30 minutes per task
Verbal Reasoning    36 65 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning    31 62 minutes
Integrated Reasoning 12 30 minutes
After the AWA, you have a 30-minute section called integrated Reasoning. This section has 12 questions, each of which may require more than one response. The questions in this section ask you to draw conclusions based on information in the table, interpret graphs, understand information presented across different layouts, and sometimes find two answers leading to a single solution. The Quantitative Reasoning section contains 31 questions in two formats- Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency, which are mixed together throughout the section. The Verbal Reasoning section contains 36 questions in three formats – Reading Comprehension, Sentence Correction, and Critical Reasoning, which are also mixed throughout the section. There are few “experimental” questions scattered throughout the test. They look just like the other multiple-choice questions but won’t add to your score. The GMAT is a computer adaptive test and so these rules are applicable:
  • You are given one question at a time, and you must answer it to move on to the next question.
  • You can’t return to previously answered questions within a section.
  • You can’t skip questions.
  • Within a section (Verbal or Quantitative), the questions are not grouped by topic or type.
SCORING IN GMAT The Analytical Writing is scored separately from the rest of the GMAT. When you get your score, it will take the form of a number from 1 to 6 in increments of 0.5. Few programs use the AWA score to differentiate candidate competitiveness. However, AWA score is used as a check against the writing skills you demonstrate in your application essays. The Integrated Reasoning section has its own scoring scale, separate from the 200 to 800 scale. Scores on the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning depend on your performance on the questions given and on the number of questions answered in the time allotted. The most important score on the GMAT is the total score, which ranges from 200 to 800.This score is the GMAT result that schools look at primarily. The top ten business schools accept students with an average GMAT score of 718, almost 94th percentile!
